Iowa is rough on siding. Not "oh it fades a little" rough. More like "your vinyl cracked in February, your paint is peeling by July, and there is mold growing behind the panels you can not even see" rough.

Between the freeze-thaw cycles (we swing from -10 to 50 degrees in the same week sometimes), the hail, the summer humidity, and the UV exposure, siding in Iowa takes a beating that most manufacturers do not test for. That 30-year warranty on the box? In Iowa, expect closer to 20.

We install all three major siding materials across the Des Moines metro. Here is what we have learned about each one after years of ripping off old siding and putting up new.

Vinyl Siding

Cost installed: $4 to $8 per square foot

Vinyl is the most popular siding material in Iowa and it is not hard to see why. It is cheap, it handles moisture without rotting, and you never have to paint it. For a standard Iowa home, a full vinyl siding job runs somewhere between $8,000 and $14,000.

The good: vinyl does not rot, does not attract termites, and cleans up with a garden hose. Lower-maintenance than any other option on this list. If you are on a budget or planning to sell in the next few years, vinyl makes a lot of sense.

The bad: cheap vinyl cracks in extreme cold. We have pulled off panels that snapped like crackers after one bad Iowa winter. And over time, vinyl fades. The color is baked in so you can not paint it. Once it starts looking washed out, you are replacing it, not repainting.

Our take: vinyl is a solid choice for most Iowa homes. Just do not go bottom-shelf. The difference between $4/sq ft vinyl and $7/sq ft vinyl is the difference between siding that lasts 15 years and siding that lasts 25.

Fiber Cement Siding

Cost installed: $8 to $14 per square foot

This is what we install more and more of every year. Fiber cement (brands like James Hardie, which is the most common) is made from cement, sand, and cellulose fibers. It looks like real wood but it does not rot, does not burn, and does not attract bugs.

The good: fiber cement handles Iowa weather better than anything else. It does not crack in the cold like vinyl. It does not swell and warp in the humidity. It holds paint for 15+ years, which means you are not repainting every 5 to 7 like you would with wood. It also has the best curb appeal of any siding material. When people tell us their home looks "custom," it is usually fiber cement.

The bad: it is heavy. A single panel weighs 2 to 3 times what vinyl weighs, which means installation takes longer and costs more. You need a crew that knows what they are doing. Bad installation leads to moisture getting behind the panels, and in Iowa, that moisture freezes and causes problems fast.

Our take: if your budget allows it, fiber cement is the best long-term investment for an Iowa home. We have seen 20-year-old Hardie board that still looks great. We can not say the same about any vinyl we have pulled off.

Engineered Wood Siding

Cost installed: $7 to $12 per square foot

Engineered wood (LP SmartSide is the big name) gives you the look and feel of real wood without the rot and maintenance headaches. It is made from wood strands bonded with resin and treated to resist moisture, termites, and fungal decay.

The good: it looks and feels like real wood. It takes paint beautifully, it is lighter than fiber cement (easier and faster to install), and it handles impact better than vinyl. For homeowners who want that natural, classic look, engineered wood delivers.

The bad: it still needs repainting every 10 to 15 years. If the edges or joints are not sealed properly during installation, moisture gets in and the wood fibers start to swell. In Iowa, with our freeze-thaw and humidity, that is a real risk if your installer cuts corners.

Our take: beautiful product when installed correctly. We like it for homeowners who want the wood look but do not want to deal with real cedar maintenance. Just make sure your contractor seals every cut edge. We do. Not everyone does.

So Which One Should You Pick?

Here is how we think about it when a homeowner in Des Moines or Ankeny asks us:

Pick vinyl if: you are on a tighter budget, your home is in the $200K to $350K range, or you are planning to sell in the next 3 to 5 years. Good vinyl siding looks great, lasts long enough, and the ROI at resale is solid.

Pick fiber cement if: you plan to stay in your home 10+ years, your home is worth $300K+, or you just want the best siding you can put on a house. The upfront cost is higher, but you will spend less on maintenance over time and your home will look better longer.

Pick engineered wood if: you love the look of real wood, you want something that feels premium, and you are willing to repaint in 10 to 15 years. It is a great middle ground between vinyl and fiber cement on both cost and appearance.

Siding FAQs for Iowa Homeowners

Vinyl lasts 20 to 30 years. Fiber cement lasts 30 to 50. Engineered wood lasts 20 to 30 with proper maintenance. Iowa's weather can shorten these numbers if the siding was not installed correctly or if you went with a lower-grade product.

Fiber cement. It does not crack in extreme cold like cheap vinyl can, and it handles the moisture from freeze-thaw cycles without swelling or warping. If budget is a concern, mid-grade or premium vinyl is a solid runner-up.

For a standard home in the Des Moines metro, expect $8,000 to $20,000 depending on the material and how much prep work is needed. Vinyl is the cheapest, fiber cement is the most expensive, and engineered wood falls in between. We provide free estimates with exact pricing for your home.

Technically yes. But we usually recommend against it. Layering new siding over old hides any rot or moisture damage underneath. In Iowa, where moisture gets trapped behind siding all winter, that hidden damage only gets worse. Tearing off the old siding first lets us inspect and fix the sheathing before anything new goes on.
